soon after i first moved to baltimore, i drove through gwynns falls
park on my way somewhere, and thought it was a complete dump. (quite
literally -- garbage everywhere, and a reputation as the place where
certain people are known to leave bodies as well...) a few years
later, i came through and was amazed to see what had been done.
several community organizations had gotten together to clean up the
park and make it a wonderful place to come to picnic, play, or walk
the trail. (the four mile trail winds up the hill at a very gradual
slope so that before you know it, you're looking out across a hillside
you'd swear was in west virginia instead of in the middle of the city;
it's wonderful.)
congrats to everyone who's put so much time and effort into turning
this around; it's a great inspiration for the rest of the city to
realize the potential we have waiting in our neighborhoods.

this is quite remarkably spiffy for a baltimore city park. i was
thoroughly impressed the first time i rounded the bend in franklintown
road and saw this.

a map of the current park and trail. the trail is 4 miles long today;
the plan is for it to eventually stretch to 14 miles and go all the
way to the inner harbor. comments

a cellar of some sort off to the right from the pavilion. peter
walked right past this to pick berries, then swore the second time he
was here that he never noticed it before. i've decided not to turn to
peter if i ever need a private investigator. comments
