baltimore's inner harbor

in august of 2000, i was about to go on a trip to california, and the time had come to buy a cellphone. i saw that there was a sprint shop just off the inner harbor, so i headed down there to get a phone and buy some other things i needed.

i parked beside federal hill and took this shot, intending to point out the world trade center and say, "that's where peter works", but he doesn't work there anymore, and was probably in the process of walking out at the same time that i took this. :)

the quite large building in the center is the new convention center hotel. unfortunately the convention center is a mile away. yes, politics came into this.

the mast is part of memorial for the the pride of baltimore 1, which sank in 1986, killing four of the crew.

along the water now, looking across.

harborplace was created in 1980 by the rouse company, the folks who brought you columbia. as has often been said, their idea of what an inner city should be is disney world. at least it's better than what was there before, by all the reports i've heard. still, there's only so much planet hollywood a person can take.

the constellation, the last all-sail ship the u.s. built. i have a brother-in-law whose grandfather served on it.

it was taken out of the harbor and put in drydock in 1996 for repairs, and it looked for awhile as if the money might not be there to finish the job. it was good to see it finally come back in 1999.

the gallery, a shopping mall in the city (obviously another rouse job). the upper floors are a hotel which contains a restaurant named "windows". dan and i had a buffet brunch there one sunday. what a great view.

the old power plant, which has been any number of things over the years. peter said the window of his office looked right out at the hard rock guitar.

looking back across at federal hill. dan and i used to love to sit up there at night and look at the city.

btw, if you watched homicide, the lighthouse-shaped condo building on the left is where luther mahoney lived.
