07/02/2004 -- glenn and i headed downtown to see some tall ships.

the light rail trains haven't been running in our neck of the woods for many months while crews have been busy converting the system to a two-track run for its whole length. last week, the line opened as far south as north linthicum, but the rest is still being replaced by these temporary buses.

after a smooth ride on shiny new tracks, we landed downtown. i took this shot up charles street looking at the washington monument, which you can't really see.

we abused the glass elevators in the hyatt and rode to the top floor to get this blurry shot through the tinted windows. the port discovery balloon is floating on the left. glenn enjoys telling people it only costs $1 to go up in it... and $11 to come back down. on the right is the world trade center, from which later shots were taken.

the new baltimore visitors center. what is it about this that cost $4.5 million? i'll bet most of the money has been set aside to pay for window cleaning.

we made a forced march to this indian restaurant in little italy (?) because they were the first hit returned by a google search for "baltimore indian buffet". this photo explains why they use a view of the taj mahal on their website, and the interior is no more prepossessing. still, the food was good, if not great. i've still found nothing in baltimore that comes within light years of the d.c. paradise. the quest continues.

a wider view. the shot tower sits under it, and america's most famous hospital lurks behind.

thanks to glenn for suggesting this last shot before leaving the inner harbor; it came out so much better than the similar one i took earlier.
