dan's photos

after dan died, there were three rolls of film laying around the house. i'm not even sure when i first realized they were there; dan was an even messier housekeeper than i was, and it took a long time to clean out the junk. i'm not sure when i first noticed them, but they sat around for years. finally, i contacted the company they came from to ask what i should do, since i had no idea whether there was anything on the rolls or not. they said to send them, and they would reimburse me if they were blank.

so, at the end of 2000, i got to see the photos dan took in 1996.

the front and end of the roll were wasted, possibly from having sat around for so long. i was hoping there would be photos of dan in here somewhere; i hope they weren't lost this way.

another ruined exposure. maybe someone with superspy-grade image skills will be able to make something of them someday.

the last trip we took before dan's death was a sunday drive to western maryland and west virginia. here's the town square in berkeley springs.

did george washington actually bathe here? yes. is this the actual tub he used? well... the sign says so, anyway.

how do they know this one's his? we didn't ask. maybe he left a distinctive ring.

the main baths. under the building on the left, there are fountains where you can fill up on mineral water. i remember that when dan's sister came up for the funeral, one wall of our kitchen was stacked with jugs we'd filled on this trip.

the top floor of the building in the center houses a museum that gives a history of the baths.

the brown door on the ground floor leads to the baths themselves. they're wonderful; large tubs (could hold 4-5 people) that are filled with hot water from the springs. dan and i came out here on a previous trip and enjoyed one of them. on this trip, they were all reserved.

we went on to harper's ferry. the hilltop house hotel has a restaurant with windows overlooking this wonderful view. dan and i used to go there for sunday brunch.

looking down the valley. that's maryland on the left, virginia on the right, and dan was standing in west virginia. just past the train bridges is the confluence of the potomac and shenandoah rivers. a beautiful spot.
