i read andrew tobias's investment book recently, and one of the cheapskate hobbies he espouses is cutting his own hair. i looked at the cover, and sure enough, he looked like his mother had lopped it off on the back porch. i found a conair home haircut kit at dollar general for $10, and decided to give it a try. at worst, i'd be out the cost of a single haircut. at best, i'd get a decade or more of cuts for the price of one.
once i reached a point in my calendar when i wouldn't have to see a lot of people, i literally cut my own, standing in front of a mirror and running the shaver over my head. the results were much as you might expect, but not a total disaster. i felt ok about going out, and my hair was short, the way i like it in the summer.
but the miracle was that glenn actually asked me to cut his! i couldn't let this feat of courage go unmatched, so i plucked up my comb and scissors, and did the best i could. judge the results for yourself. i think that after a cut or two, i'll be doing, if not a professional job, at least one which will pass most musters. and saving us maybe $100 a year.
