(09/19/2007) lodge road sits on a hillside, and settlement cracks have grown and multiplied since i've owned the house. a structural engineer confirmed that my house was slowly falling on the neighbors', and suggested i contract someone to install a system of "helical piles" at a cost of approximately $∞. they work by digging a series of holes, drilling down to bedrock, attaching piers to the bottom of the foundation, and turning the screw in each to lift and stabilize. they say they can usually lift the house to where it should be. at the least, they can stop it where it is. it should be a permanent fix for the life of the house, with a guarantee for the first twenty years.
