atlanta linux showcase

i headed to atlanta for an osdn site directors meeting (scoop was still doing his civil service) and for atlanta linux showcase. als is the last of the linux conventions still run by a lug and without so much focus on business.

i was mainly out to get photos here of people i missed in san jose.

registration. it's either a trick of the light, or the guy in the middle is being touched by an angel.

our booth, such as it was.

als is a smaller show than either of the linuxworlds, and our booth was reduced in size to match it. well, ok, overreduced. well, ok, my college dorm room was larger.

emmett preparing for his linux.com live! presentation on kernel modules, which was attended by two guys from the university of maryland college park lug and five people on irc who joined the channel and never said anything. that's pretty much what the whole show was like the first morning; hackers are not early rising people. it picked up as the day went on, and one of the show planners who stopped by said that the first day's always like that; the crowds start getting thicker on the second day.

they had a bunch of these live! events in san jose, and they were fun. it's like what slashdot did in new york, broadcasting stuff like the jon katz interview over an mp3 stream, with people listening at home (well, ok, work) and submitting questions for him over irc. l.c's events are more technical, so they not only let the people who can't make it to the show join in the fun, but give them a chance to teach as well.

als is held in a combination convention center/shopping mall, something i've never seen before. makes it easier to find a 1/4 way decent place to eat, anyway, which is more than can be said for convention centers in other citys. (*cough* new york *cough* *cough*)

the entrance to the mall/convention center. the outdoor dining area on the left is part of "jocks and jills". don't ask. (i didn't.)

downtown atlanta at night. i wish this had come out better. the building on the left is topped with an open metal framework, and generally rocks.

as promised, things picked up as the show went on. cool folks hanging out in our booth -- that's larry wall in the colorful shirt, and eric raymond standing in front of him.
