i spent a couple of days in san diego. a nice town; i'd like to get
back there someday and look around some more.

perry's cafe in the travelodge parking lot. so what's with this
place? they opened at 6:00am, i ate there around 11:00am, and the
line outside was at least this long the whole time. the food was ok,
but nothing special. are they the only place open for breakfast on
sunday morning in el cajon?

i checked into motel 6, walked around downtown a bit, headed back to
my room. thought i was in for the night, but i started talking to
someone who said i should go to the caliph. i checked the map, and
since i was just a mile from it, i headed over there. hung around for
an hour, but only two older guys showed up, and they were a couple.
it was karaoke night, which may have kept people away.
san diego has a nice gay neighborhood -- rainbow flags on restaurants
and stores all along fifth avenue. comments

i headed towards the zoo. there's a large chunk of town made up of
parks, museums, theaters, performance spaces, and the zoo. all kinds
of museums; i snapped this one as i drove by it. comments

that sign reads "san diego zoo". this is about as close as i got to
it. i actually got into the parking lot, but
- it was already past 2:00.
- i was tired.
- the walk from where i would have had to park to the gate looked
bad enough, let alone walking around the zoo itself.
- as i was pondering these things, the radio announced that it was
going to rain, with a threat of flash floods.
so i just headed back to pomona. comments

i started up interstate 5, but realized i was almost out of gas, so i
had to get off and travel the pacific coast hiway again, looking for a
gas station. got to see some more ocean, anyway.
