01/29/2001 -- steve and matt arrive. we're all packing up the limo and getting ready to go. |
grant! don't know what's up with him; he's actually smiling in photos these days. |
robin's reworked limo. he finally did as he threatened and put a rolls royce body on his lincoln towncar. |
group shot. |
one more, and then we're gone. |
well, almost. grant needs to stop at compusa and buy a modem. |
got it! a sweet linksys combo modem and network card with the ports built onto the card (no dongles). i bought one for myself to replace my ailing nic when i got back. |
had to go back and find the guys, drag them out kicking and screaming. |
on the road again. |
robin at the helm. |
i guess i should explain that this is jon lasser, steve killen, and jay beale, in case you don't recognize them from some of the other sets of photos. |
the tangle of wires on my legs. we had power running from the cigarette lighter and hooked all our laptops into the hub. the plan was to use a ricochet modem and have someone route for us, but the ricochet connected for about five minutes out of the whole trip, and ran at about 0.0001 baud. |
digging into jon's superbowl party leftovers. |
what i saw whenever they tried to use the reading light across from me. |
another view, with the flash. |
steve took the camera to get a shot of me. |
grant gross of newsforge fame. in the front seat (exiled to the smoking section), matt spong of smokedot fame. |
steve: a book? not geeky enough! |
01/30/2001 -- another osdn site directors meeting. grant tries on his new newsforge fedora. |
these hats were trés (no, not that trae) popular; there was much talk about thinkgeek selling them. |
the rocking new freshmeat shirts. |
well, at least pat is paying attention to hemos. maybe. |
after the meeting, tim borrowed my camera for the night, came back with this photo. don't know what that's all about. |
01/31/2001 -- the show floor's about to open. this group of photos look especially awful; must have bumped one of the buttons on the camera. |
they let people in, and they start flocking to our booth. why not? we've got a playstation 2. |
on the right in the long hair: ray shaw, another freshmeat submission bin warrior. due to some communication mixups, he missed the limo ride, but came up on the train the next day. |
the osdn booth was divided into two sides by a wall down the middle this time. moving down our side of the wall, this next section was devoted to newsforge, themes.org, and freshmeat. |
the thinkgeek store. |
on the other side, starting from the left, linux.com. their live! events grew huge crowds interested in hearing about the 2.4 kernel. |
the center section, devoted to osdn generally. waving at us is wes moran, site designer for osdn.com. |
the last section, showing off sourceforge and question exchange. |
at the sun booth, looking at ray on the monitor. they were showing off a java framework for recording and playing back video. |
rasmus lerdorf of php fame. he was just everywhere; ray and i saw him giving this same talk five times, in two booths and a room in the conference downstairs. popular stuff, that php. |
ray takes a break from dealing with the mad backlog of submissions that came after freshmeat][ went live. |
the most annoying thing at the show. |
the other most annoying thing at the show. |
tim. |
each of these themes.org rolly things had a power strip and an ethernet cable. were rocks. i didn't take this photo just because of the guy standing there. |
the ever-popular email garden. ray and i got on a couple of machines here and worked awhile before the show opened. after that, there was no hope of getting near one. |
a suit walked by at one point and seemed quite confused by this booth. he thought "slashdot" was the name of a video game we were selling. |
thinkgeek again. lots of toys. |
the linux terminal server project booth. these guys put together a system that lets you easily set up diskless workstations that boot off a network. we've started using it at the agape house and it can't rock enough. i went to jim mcquillen's talk about it. it was standing room only, and he couldn't get through two sentences before people were shouting out questions and comments. very hot stuff. would you like to replace your $1,500 windows machines that require three fulltime sysadmins with $200 workstations that don't need any maintenance? |
02/01/2001 -- looking down the .org pavilion. hooray for the lwce planners who put these guys out front and center this year instead of hiding them in a ghetto. |
the .org information booth was run by newsforge guys; here's david graham, irc's cdlu. |
a long shot of the pavilion seen from the right. |
looking out at the crowd. i definitely didn't take this just because of the cute guy standing there. |
the sign by the entrance. too dark for my little camera. |
we hurried into a limo (no, not that limo) to head to a showing of crouching tiger hidden dragon. |
lost in the subway. we left the moovie and headed to lombardi's for pizza. got on a train going the wrong way, had to get off at one stop, get back on and get off at the next stop, walk under several blocks to another platform, double back, etc. wish we'd had someone who lives in new york with us to help... |
pizza at last. |
steve's enjoying his beer (is that legal yet?), but ray's found something more interesting on the ceiling. |
back to the hotel. |
one token to rule them all, one token to... |
slashdot cliff hangs on. |
on the express train to times square, tim decides it's time for group shots. |
cheese. |
tim gets the angle a bit wrong. |
that's better. |
silly tim. |
02/02/2001 -- the last day in new york. looking at the view from my hotel room window. |
more of the view. |
i should have taken advantage of this while i was there, but didn't. |
our hotel. |
we were on the same block as the david letterman show. |
the deli on the corner, something else i should have taken advantage of. |
the front entrance. robin chatting with bill dwyer, slashcode krow stepping out. |
i realized the camera was set to only two stars of picture quality, not three, so i took another one. krow has given up on getting a cab and decided he'll have to trust robin's driving after all. |
the nudie bar across the street. |
packing the limo. |
headed to the show for the last time. |
one of the booths across from us. i really liked this guy's... ummm... product. yeah. |
steve's monkey. |
jon took us out for lunch at veselka, a ukrainian restaurant. |
they had this completely rocking mural going around two of the walls. |
lunch done, standing on the corner waiting for our ride. |
robin arrives. |
back at the javits center, all the other limo drivers gather around to look at what robin's done to his car. (shouts of "it's a town car, man, a town car!") |
another show behind us, we head into the holland tunnel. |
jay said i wasn't allowed to take photos of people while they were sleeping. this is a photo of matt, who is not sleeping. |
we stopped at a rest stop and got some food. steve needed to take a photo of yum yum. a couple of hours later, we were home. i wanted to get some photos of the orgy, but they locked my camera in the glove compartment before we started. oh, well. next time. |
