#umbclinux moove to oftc?

this morning, scoop took the freshmeat channels off openprojects.net and moved them to oftc.net[1]. this prompted me to ask whether we should do the same with #umbclinux. why would we consider this?

  1. opn has turned into the public television pledge drive network, with lilo issuing global notices every 15 minutes asking people to pay his bills for him.
  2. opn has become increasingly unstable. netsplit. netsplit. netsplit.
  3. some people are unhappy with the way opn is run and prefer oftc's democratic approach.
  4. the freshmeat channels have already moved there and jeffcovey is lazy. :)

#space[2] has been created on irc.oftc.net; come play around with it and share your thoughts on whether we should do this.

update: phil_tty has written SpaceBot to collect votes. it's in both #umbclinux and #space. use SpaceBot: poll 1 to get the current vote tally, and SpaceBot: vote 1 [letter] to cast your vote.

update update: SpaceBot has a second poll for the channel name now (#umbclinux vs. #space vs. something else). the commands are SpaceBot: poll 2 and SpaceBot: vote 2 [letter].

thanks.

footnotes

  1. oftc is a network created by current and former opn staff members who aren't happy with opn.
  2. some people feel that the name #umbclinux doesn't reflect what the channel has grown into. hopefully, #space will be large enough to hold it.
